CON KARAKATSANIS
For Con Karakatsanis, racing is more than a hobby; it is a way of life.
Con fell in love with the sport from the moment he could walk and talk, catching the bug from his dad, trainer Tony Karakatsanis.
Being the son of a trainer Con was able to watch his father ply his trade, learning a myriad of lessons.
However, Con was determined to be a jockey, a dream he set his mind to with vengeance.
Beginning his jockey apprenticeship in 2000 at the tender age of 15 under the guidance of his father Tony, Con quickly signalled himself as a jockey to watch, taking out the final of the Rising Stars Series for apprentices in just his second year
During his apprenticeship, Con completed Certificate 4 in Racing, studying a range of subjects extraneous to his jockey subjects including equine anatomy, physiology and communications.
Con forged a successful riding career, chalking up many winners and building partnerships with a number of talented gallopers including Mistegic and This Manshood.
Although Con has only possessed a trainer’s licence for just three years, he has made an immediate impact, training his first Group 1 winner at just 24 years of age. Black Piranha has ascended from metropolitan winner to genuine Group 1 performer under Con’s tutelage, chalking up a second Stradbroke win in 2010. Additionally in 2010, News Alert continued to be a consistent performer in stakes class, taking out the Listed Canterbury Classic and Wagga Town Plate before finishing close up in the Group 1 Doomben 10,000.
Additionally, since taking out his trainer’s licence, Con Karakatsanis has had a huge impact on the annual Grafton Cup carnival, training countless winners over the two days in the past three years. Con’s affinity for Grafton has been built over fifteen year’s attendance with his father, and has become like a home away from home for the young trainer.
In his limited down time, Con is passionate about Rugby League and loves supporting his beloved Sydney City Roosters to victory. He also enjoys golf, fishing and catching up with friends.
