When the word unlucky springs to mind, Magicaz appears in flashing lights.
She has only had the 6 raceday starts, her first start was one to forget, she was very lucky to even stay on her feet, her next start resulted in a 3rd, then she headed off to the paddock for a well deserved spell. She came back in to the stable better than ever, she had gained weight and muscle and the results have showen. She resumed well at Wyong, finishing off her run without much luck, Beaumont was another unlucky venture, unsuccessfully protesting against a Godolphin runner when placing 2nd, the winner went on to win in town next start, Magicaz was loaded on along with another stablemate and headed off to Albury, there was a 3yo maiden 1400m, a distance Magicaz hadn't been over before, she was sent out a $1.20 favourite and the rest is history, she won like a $1.20 pop should have. The ride by John Kissick was superb, couldn't have asked for a better ride. Sitting just behind the two leaders on straightening Kissick peeled off, balanced her up and let her go, 9 lengths was the margin in the end, eased up and ears pricked.
The win was sentimental and very emotional, Brian and Lyn McGrath who have been racing horses with us for many years gave me the call up to train their team of horses when I resumed training at Warwick Farm. We have had so many placings and it was so frustrating, all I wanted was to win races and repay them for putting the trust back in me with their horses, it certainly took a while but it was definitely worth every bit of it. Magicaz is a pleasure to train, along with the several others Brian and Lyn have with me and I'm very fortunate to have these wonderful people involved, I can't wait to share many more successful ventures with the horses we have now and quality of horses they have to come.
Magicaz has had a short spell and will be aimed at the Grafton carnival in July.
